GENERAL SESSION - PANEL: Connect, Belong, Thrive: Building Bridges for All
Professor Elizabeth Bennion will chat with local majors about how to build an inclusive city – one that in which all residents may feel a sense of connection and belonging. The mayors will talk about their quest to build cities where all can contribute and thrive.  The panelists will discuss concrete steps they’ve taken to advance equity and inclusion, while fostering a sense of connection and belonging for diverse residents across all racial, ethnic, gender, and economic backgrounds. They will discuss how a DEIB framework influences their decisions about urban development and renewal, and what role DEIJB initiatives play in shaping the city’s leadership and goals. They’ll also share ideas about how to promote trust within a community while also building trust between a city’s leaders and the people they serve. Finally, they will discuss efforts to collaborate with leaders from other cities to attract and retain talent, promote economic growth, provide widespread economic and cultural opportunities, and ensure a high quality of life across the region. This candid conversation will include both successes and continued challenges as our region works toward inclusive communities and a bright future for all.

At the end of the session attendees will be able to:
  • Explain steps that cities can take to advance equity and inclusion while strengthening residents' sense of belonging.
  • List specific programs, policies, and actions mayors have taken to promote trust within a community, between diverse communities, and between these communities and local leaders.
  • Identify “blind spots” that city leaders sometimes exhibit, and the costs of such blind spots, if a DEIJB framework is not utilized when making decisions about community development and economic growth.
  • Discuss collaborative efforts and opportunities to grow the population, economy, and quality of life in our region.

Leveraging an Abundance Mindset in Leadership and Living

Dr. Ryan Donlan, with inspiration from his a recent international presentation and involvement with The Process Communication Model®(PCM), has leveraged contemporary thought leadership in the curation and promotion of inclusive leadership and meaningful living, through exploration and development of an Abundance Mindset.  Discovered and refined through connections with trusted leadership experts and adaptive communications specialists, one’s Abundance Mindset invites a perspective that recognizes the value and power of divergence where success is celebrated inclusively and distributive resources do not need to expense anothers’ success.  Basically, an Abundance Mindset is a way of “being,” metaphorically, in keeping with how rising tides can help all ships. When participants attend, they will be encouraged to see themselves and their leadership efforts through an Abundance Mindset; they will share lived experiences recalling how similar perspectives have influenced their lives.  Session attendees will engage in rich presentation and idea-sharing, leaving with a perspective through which they recommit in navigating leadership and life.

By the end of this session, attendees will:
  • Embrace the clarity, potential, and personal empowerment in leadership and living through the lens of an Abundance Mindset
  • Value the circumstantial humility that empowers us from within, with ongoing Abundance perspectives and intentional reframing
  • Enjoy a newfound professional confidence and peace, with clarity in how passion and purpose in leadership and life intersect if we allow, Abundantly.

"The Play's the Thing:" Designing joyful experiences to break down silos and build up community in Downtown South Bend.

Shakespeare once said, “The play’s the thing.” We here at Downtown South Bend, Inc. (DTSB) wholeheartedly agree.  Downtown is the "front yard" for the whole city and DTSB, Inc. starts with the premise that the heart of our city is for everyone. We recognize that it’s easy to become siloed by where we work, live, study, or recreate. So, in an effort to connect people to the unparalleled economic and cultural opportunities that downtown affords our community, we create experiences that are grounded in enjoying life’s simple pleasures together. Over the past two years we’ve produced 150 events with 150,000 total attendees. From large-scale art festivals, to First Fridays, to Wine Walks, to ribbon-cuttings, to parades, to summer movie nights and much more, we design our events as a form of structured play; and we know that when people play they open up to new possibilities. So what better way to bring people of different backgrounds together and create new associations to one another and to our city than through experiences that help us start seeing each other not as a demographic category but as neighbors.   But as much as we like to have a good time, our work isn’t all just fun and games. Engaging in structured play is also good business. As we create an atmosphere where everyone is welcome and diverse people from every part of the city are in the habit of coming downtown, diverse businesses and development have followed. Since 2022, DTSB, Inc. has welcomed 31 new businesses (54% women or minority-owned), provided opportunities for 400% more local businesses through First Fridays markets, and supported the redevelopment of 15 long-vacant buildings by local, small-scale developers. The common ground we create through play becomes the fertile soil that fosters diverse new businesses, engaged neighbors, and economic inclusion.

By the end of this session, attendees will:
  • Gain insight into the many ways a vibrant downtown enhances quality of life across the city, gain awareness of the strategies designed to foster economic inclusion, and be able to take a page out of DTSB, Inc.'s playbook to use the spirit of play to foster a connected community.
